Leading in Tough Times

The world of employment is making headlines at the moment, but if you look closely, there is some good news.

As many employers start to gear up for the increase in National Insurance from April and a general tightening of costs, it is worth remembering that there is often an untapped resource at your disposal.

As we look at structures, efficiency and opportunities in these challenging times, it is worth remembering that in most cases, the answers lie within your team. They are the world experts -they deliver for your clients, customers and stakeholders and your job as a leader is to tap into this potential and their ideas.

This means making sure that your team contribute to strategy, they are fully aware of the objectives for the team, the wider company and themselves and that you have a constant dialogue to find better and more efficient ways to work.

Not only will you reap the benefits, but there is no doubt that it’s highly motivational for people to be asked their opinion – what are your thoughts?

The days of command and control bosses are over – people want to be led. But how do we achieve this? So often in our economy, we promote the person who is technically the best at what they do into a leadership role and overlook the fact that it is a completely different set of skills.

Where do you get these skills? How do you understand the context of leadership and how your actions and, in some cases inactions, interact?

There is an answer to this – Action Centred Leadership – a tried and trusted method of training leadership at every level in an organisation. Trevor Vanstone of Perspective HR has trained hundreds of leaders from within our client base and beyond over the last 15 years and our latest training course is on April 3rd and 10th at the beautiful Land Rover Experience in East Devon.

There are still a couple of places left and the busy two-day course (spread over two weeks to make it easier for folks to attend) will introduce you to the functions of leadership – what you actually have to do.

And because it’s an open course you’ll be working with people from different worlds and other views of this interesting, difficult and often exhilarating world of leadership.

Trevor is an accredited trainer with Adair Leadership, the company of Professor John Adair, the world’s foremost leadership writer.

These are challenging times, and it requires deep thought and energy to look at your organisation and make it better and the starting point is leadership at every level.

You can start this process on April 3rd – to book click here. Feel free to give Trevor a ring at Perspective HR on 01392 247436 or email trevor@perspectivehr.co.uk to find out more or talk about a course bespoke for your team.
