Guide to the National Minimum and Living Wage

There are different levels of National Minimum Wage, depending on the age of the worker.

The rates from April 2022 are as follows:

  • Adults (which means people aged 23 and over) receive the full rate of £9.50 per hour. The National Living Wage.
  • Aged 21 to 22 receive the rate of £9.18 per hour.
  • A ‘development rate’ of £6.83 an hour is paid to workers aged 18 to 20 inclusive.
  • Young people (those older than school leaving age (after the end of summer term of the school year in which they turn 16) and younger than 18) receive £4.81 an hour.
  • Apprentices under the age of 19 receive £4.81 an hour.
  • Apprentices who are 19 or over and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship receive £4.81 an hour.

The National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage increases which will come into force during April 2023 have been announced:

  • For those aged 23 and over, a 92p or 9.7 per cent, increase to the NLW (from £9.50 to £10.42 per hour)
  • For those aged 21 -22, a £1 or 10.9 per cent, increase (from £9.18 to £10.18 per hour)
  • For those aged between 18 – 20, a 66p or 9.7 per cent, increase (from £6.83 to £7.49 per hour)
  • For those aged between 16 – 17, a 47p or 9.7 per cent, increase (from £4.81 to £5.28 per hour), and
  • An increase in the apprenticeship rate of 47p (from £4.81 to £5.28 per hour)
